Ever wonder why Sammy's Pizza Parlors in Duluth are always busy and crowded? Even when other pizza places are offering low, low prices and discounts? I know. I've known for over 50 years. When I was a kid in West Duluth my older sister brought home s small half pepperoni and half Sammy's Special that the whole family got to try. We were hooked. My Sammy's story is that (while the price has gone up a tad from the $1.25 for a small) the taste of my favorite - Sammy's Special is exactly the same as it was in 1959. And that taste is great. It has indeed, been a family tradition.

This is our family's favorite Sammy's story as told by Angie Mahle (daughter-in-law)
Eight years ago I picked up my daughter Emily at pre-school. We were walking down the hall at Laura MacArthur when she announced, "I smell pizza." I told her they were probably having pizza in the lunchroom. Then she said, "No, mom, I smell Sammy's pizza. Just as I was about to tell her that they don't serve Sammy's in the lunchroom, we turned a corner in the hallway and just about ran into a man carrying five Sammy's boxes. Emily Ann is eleven now and stays true to her shirt's caption: If we are not going to Sammy's, I'm staying home.

Sammy's has been a favorite place of mine to go on Friday or Saturday nights since grade school. I would save my paper route money for a pizza night on the weekend and in junior high we go after a school dance. Whatever the occasion would be, Sammy's Pizza and its ambiance was always a final destination. I'm turning "50" this year and would love to have a block party for the neighborhood. I'm sure Sammy's Pizza would get all the neighbors together nicely. I have a great idea for a flyer for the occasion. Here is what the flyer will say: Come have some family fun with SAMMY'S PIZZA and the sun! When the food & frolic is done, hope you enjoyed your day a ton!
Sammy's... please help me celebrate, the gym can wait. YUM~~~~ Sammy's----I can smell it now.
A Sammy's fan for fifty years. Kathleen Gondek
I'll provide the hors d'oeuvres, beverages and dessert.

It's 1958 to 1961, you are 500 miles from home, (get home twice a year) going to school. Money is scarce...girls in dorm put in their dimes, nickels, a few quarters, find someone with a car and get that taste of home...a Sammy's pepperoni pizza.........a piece or 2 for each contributer/car driver,too...mouth watering good.....ah, the memories of those friendships. Go forward to 1970s, introduce son to Sammy's...continue the tradition...2000 he introduces his wife and son to Sammy's.........life is good.

My son, Josh Anderson, grew up loving Sammy's pizza from the Lakeside Sammy's Pizza. He moved to the Cities, Sammy's there wasn't the same. Then he moved to Winona and was excited to find out there was a Sammy's there; again, not the same great taste as those in Northern Minnesota. I followed Mike to the Cloquet Sammy's pizza and now, whenever Josh is in Cloquet, we eat at Sammy's and whenever I'm heading to Winona I stop to pick up a big pizza as a treat for Josh. In fact, for his 30th birthday I surprised him with a Sammy's pepperoni pizza (his favorite) for his gift and he was thrilled.

Last week I went into Sammy's Pizza Lakeside. I had my almost one year old daughter with me. The staff was so incredibly helpful. They went above and beyond to make sure she would get a good meal even though she can't eat pizza or subs! First, after watching us struggle with a squirmy child, one of the staff came to our rescue with a high chair...one word on the high chair...it was sparkling...it was so clean! Which all moms know isn't the case at most restaurants. Then the staff continued to help me pick a meal off the menu to accommodate my daughter's needs...the staff returned promptly with a little fun plate consisting of shredded cheese, turkey and one meatball. We were able to relax and enjoy our pizza! I was so impressed with the staff and how they made sure we were comfortable...I especially was impressed because the staff was younger! How refreshing! I will continue to be a loyal customer to Sammy's pizza Lakeside! Thank you!

When I was a child, my parents had season tickets to the UMD hockey games. I don't remember very many or the games, but what I do remember is going to dinner before the game, every Saturday at Sammy's Pizza in West Duluth. Since it was "Family Night" at Sammy's, we fit right in.....with our family size pepperoni pizza and pitcher of soda. Spending this time at Sammy's with my parents and my brother, has become one of my fondest memories, it was OUR Sammy's tradition.
Thank you Sammy's

My husband and I grew up with Sammy's pizza back in 1954 in Hibbing. My husband used to play cards with Sammy. Until that time we didn't know about pizza so everyone ordered cheese pizza. Every Friday night. We both moved to Mpls, found Gertie Hengle in St. Paul and used to go there. You can image how happy we were when a Sammy's came to Coon Rapids and now in Brooklyn Park. Our kids were born in Mpls. but every time we went to Hibbing, they wanted Sammy's pizza. Now that has become their favorite pizza, none like it they say. Almost every Friday night we order a Sammy's to this day. Keep up the good work. A quality product.

We continued the tradition after we were married. We moved to Mpls in 1972 and really missed our Friday night Sammy's pizzas. We occasionally visited the Coon Rapids location but it wasn't close enough to home. Needless to say we were thrilled when you opened in Brooklyn Park. We have been Friday night regulars since it opened. Nick and his crew take great care of us and usually know what we want before we order:) My only disappointment came on my birthday when Nick wouldn't sing to me...NEXT YEAR was his promise. The extended family even had Sammy's Pizza delivered to a Superior Motel the night before Mom's funeral, knowing she would have loved that. Now our whole family drives from Bloomington, Lake Elmo, and Chaska to meet at Sammy's in Coon Rapids to continue the love affair we all have with Sammy's. I am from Rapid City South Dakota. I took a construction job at Minot AFB in 2005. This was my first trip ever that far north. I found Minot to be very unique and I loved the area and people. My work crew and I decided to eat out and friends we made said we had to try Sammy's. At first I was a little skeptical upon entering the antiquated restaurant. However, once seated, the menu looked rather good. We started with some of the wings, and to this day, those are still the best wings you can get. They were crispy, spicy, well cooked, and delicious. We then went for the Bert's Best. And in all my life, to this moment, that pizza is the best. Bert's Best is the BEST. I have spent several occasions eating at Sammy's with an array of friends, and every time it has been a good positive experience, and every time the food is fantastic. My brother and I always discuss what the secret it to Bert's Best. I think the flavor secret, whether it is some sort of mystical mojo to a simple flavoring formula, is the best part of Sammy's. I wished there was a Sammy's everywhere. As it is, for me and my brother, whenever, we venture to Minot to revisit our friends we made there, Sammy's is the automatic first stop.

Returning from the wedding reception, on the way to their Honeymoon suite, Olli called the downtown Sammy's Pizza and had a "House Special" created, they stopped by and picked it up on the way to the suite. The best memory of growing up was looking forward to Fri. night, because that was Sammy's pizza night. It all started when I was about 5 and my dad owned a business in Duluth and had to close shop late Fri. nights so he would call Lakeside Sammy's every Fri. and ordered a family size house special. This was such a routine thing that he would not even have to call he would just show up at 10:15 and they would say here is your pizza Jim Proudlock, if he was a minute late they would call him to make sure it was still fri. night family pizza night. It was such a treat because I got to stay up late and that was the only time I got to eat in my parents bed. Even when I got older, we still continued the tradition. I remember coming home from college and having my fri. night house Sammy's Pizza. Now I am married and live in Esko and my husband and I would like to continue the family tradition with our son. We hope that they will get to know our name and pizza order in Cloquet. That for the great pizza and a memory that will continue and last a life time.
